Brave gamers shed new light on the mysterious legends of Dracula in Curse of Darkness, 2005's cross-console chapter in Konami's long-running, horror-themed action series, Castlevania. The 3D combat game's story is set soon after the events of the NES' Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, but instead of casting players as another stalwart adventurer from the heroic Belmont line, it puts them in the role of a supernaturally powerful warrior called Hector. Before the vampire was destroyed in Dracula's Curse, Hector served Count Dracula as one of the undead king's trusted Devil Forgemasters. In the absence of the vampire lord from this world, however, Dracula's minions turned on one another. A Forgemaster called Issac believed that Hector was responsible Dracula's death, and he arranged the murder of Hector's lover in vengeance. Now, with no lord to command him and no love to temper his fury, Hector sets out to seek some vengeance of his own. The powers of a Devil Forgemaster allow for the magical enhancement of "Innocent Devils" -- minion entities that serve their master by attacking his enemies, disarming traps, and helping to solving in-game puzzles. Hector can custom-develop his Innocent Devils with the powers and abilities that will serve him best, and these minions will offer crucial support to Hector's formidable fighting abilities. Curse of Darkness was developed by the same Konami studio that created 2003's Castelvania: Lament of Innocence.

Set in Middle-earth around the time of the Fellowship, The Lord of the Rings: Tactics allows players to guide the forces of good (or evil) to victory, through a series of turn-based, RPG-style battles. With victory, the player's characters grow stronger and gain new powers. Elevation and other environmental factors can affect the outcome of each attack, promoting sophisticated strategic planning. Unlike many earlier games of the tactical RPG style (such as Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre), The Lord of the Rings: Tactics features a system that applies the moves of all opponents at the same time, leading to faster-paced play and more unexpected outcomes.

Professor Xavier's team of misunderstood mutants battles on in this sequel RPG from Raven and Activision, creators of the original. Once again, players control small squads of X-Men in a series of action-oriented, combat-intensive missions that lead them through the game's comics-inspired story line. Between missions, heroes can rest, recover, and re-supply, at Professor's X academy headquarters, or one of four other game world hubs. Each of the game's 16 playable characters has ten personalized powers, which can be customized and upgraded with experience and power-ups.In addition to Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, and other characters playable in the first Legends, the sequel also lets fans of the series choose lesser-known X-Men, such as the energy-absorbing Bishop, or even the team's nemesis, Magento, and members of his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants such as Toad and Juggernaut. It seems that past rivalries may be forgotten --
at least temporarily -- in the face of a universal threat posed by the ancient, megalomaniacal, Egyptian super-mutant known as Apocalypse.As did the original releases, the GameCube version of X-Men: Legends II -- Rise of Apocalypse features a same-screen cooperative multiplayer mode.
